By Rochelle Roesler SRES® – Your Local Senior Real Estate Specialist
Talking to aging parents about moving to a senior living community isn’t easy. It’s emotional, deeply personal, and often met with resistance. But it’s also an opportunity—a way to help your loved ones live with more comfort, safety, and social connection in this next phase of life.
Whether the conversation starts after a fall, a hospitalization, or just mounting worries about isolation or home upkeep, how you approach the topic can make all the difference.
Start with Real-Life Concerns
The best way to begin the conversation is to meet them where they are—acknowledge the real issues they may already be facing:
• Are they having trouble with stairs or lawn care?
• Are they forgetting bills or appointments?
• Have you noticed weight loss, bruises, or loneliness?

“Dad, I’ve noticed it’s getting harder for you to keep up with the house. I worry it’s wearing you out. What do you think?”
Ask Meaningful Questions
Instead of making assumptions, invite your parent to share their thoughts and feelings:
• “What would make life easier for you right now?”
• “If we found a place that felt comfortable and allowed you to keep your independence, would you want to look at it together?”
• “What are you most worried about if you ever had to move?”
This opens space for honest conversation, and helps you understand what matters most to them—whether it's staying close to their social circle, keeping a pet, or having enough privacy.
Take a Tour—No Pressure
Sometimes the best way to calm fears is to take a look. Schedule a low-key visit to a senior living community—just to walk around, grab a coffee in the bistro, or peek in on an activity.
Many communities now offer trial stays, guest dining, or open house events to help prospective residents see what life is really like. A tour helps dispel myths and can even generate excitement once they see modern, vibrant environments and active residents.
Even if they don’t choose to move right away, the experience plants a seed—and often shifts the conversation from fear to possibility.
